What you need to know

The gradual stabilization of Brazil’s economy and milk production costs should help the ice cream market improve its performance. Despite the retail sales fall in terms of value registered in 2017 (-3.8%), Mintel forecasts the category should grow both in value and volume over the coming years. The growth rate, however, tends to be much lower compared to pre-economic recession period.

Health concerns have also been affecting the category. On the one hand, according to the survey conducted for this Report, 22% of consumers are buying less ice cream than 12 months ago due to health reasons. On the other hand, consumers demonstrate they would be interested in trying organic/no sugar/non-diary ice creams, ice creams with natural ingredients, and frozen fruit creams.

The main purchase driver, however, is “a favorite flavor,” mentioned by 51% of consumers. Brands have the challenge of becoming the “favorite flavor” while offering more healthful options.
