The consumption per capita of ready-to-drink juice in Brazil is still low, at only six liters per year. The highest consumption is of freshly squeezed juice. Brazil presents space for growth of ready-to-drink juice products; the challenge is to convince consumers to switch to these products.

Mintel estimates the retail revenues of the juice market will reach R$8.1 billion in 2015. Looking ahead, retail sales value in the juice category are forecast to grow by 62% between 2015 and 2020, to reach R$13.2 billion.

Definition

This report analyzes all fruit juice and juice drinks in Brazil. For the market size data, the following products are included: all frozen, refrigerated or ambient fruit or vegetable juices; pure juice, ready-to-drink nectars and juice drinks, including carbonated juices that consumers can drink without adding water. Coconut water is also included and it is classified as “pure juice” (coconut juice).

For the market size data, the following products are excluded: all dehydrated/powdered juices that need to have water added; syrups, cordial and squashes to which consumers must add water; unpackaged freshly squeezed fruit juices which are made up from fruit at the point of purchase and consumed immediately (eg at fruit juice bars); smoothies, energy fruit drinks and flavored waters.

Channels included in the market data:

  • All retail channels including direct sales to consumers. The retail sales only include packaged products.

  • Sales to foodservice channels, such as restaurants and hotels, as well as to the food industry.

  • Products not included in the market size (eg powdered juices) are analyzed in the consumer survey and key issues sections where relevant.

Segment definitions

  • Pure juice: juice consisting of 100% fruit juice.

  • Nectars: juice containing 25-99% fruit juice, with added ingredients, mainly water.

  • Juice drinks: fruit-based still drinks containing less than 25% fruit juice, with added ingredients such as water, but also sweeteners, flavorings, colorings and/or vitamins.

  • Freshly squeezed juice: freshly squeezed juices made at home or at a foodservice outlet, for immediate consumption.
