Supermarket chain Esselunga has launched an online wine shop, offering over 1,400 wines and spirits from around the world, with the majority from Italy and France. An assortment of labels such as Krug, Château Mouton Rothschild, Dom Pérignon, Sassicaia, Tignanello, and Cervaro della Sala will be offered, with prices ranging from €10 to €1,000.
The exclusive selection will not be available in the wine shops located in the group’s superstores and laEssa neighbourhood stores.
“With forecast data for 2023 suggesting that hypermarkets and supermarkets (which most of Esselunga's stores are) is likely to be one of the slowest growing sectors in the grocery market, Esselunga has been looking for ways to diversify its business and tap into high-growth areas. Its move into the convenience stores sector with LaEsse is one example of this. Moving into selling premium wines and spirits online helps to build on its already strong focus on this sector in-store, where it has a sommelier on hand in each store to offer customers advice.
Research for our reportSupermarkets - Italy - 2023shows that Esselunga has the most affluent customers of all the leading supermarket chains, with 20% of people from households with a net monthly income of €3,000 or more doing their regular grocery shopping there, so this offer is likely to resonate with its core audience. For more insights into the supermarkets sector and the leading players in the sector, see our forthcoming report, Supermarkets - Italy - 2023.”
