Aldi has extended its grocery delivery service with Deliveroo to almost 130 stores. The trial has been extended to include customers in Scotland and Wales and comes as the discounter continues to accelerate its online capabilities.

The partnership will allow customers to order online and have it delivered by Deliveroo within 30 minutes.

Mintel comment:

“The UK’s grocery market has changed dramatically with the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic. With concerns around crowded stores, consumers have moved online in record numbers. Mintel estimates that the growth of the whole online sector for 2020 will hit 42.3%. Retailers without established ecommerce operations are at a disadvantage. The food discounters, in particular, have been slow to move into online, in part at least because margins are already thin in their simple, low-cost operations and because online retail is complex and costly to get right. Partnerships like this with Deliveroo therefore, let Aldi reach new customers and deliver convenience whilst keeping complexity at a minimum. The shift to ecommerce is here to stay and we expect to see more retailers expand in this sector either through lower risk partnerships with delivery companies or click-and-collect operations.”
