Screwfix is set to open 20 of its new inner-city convenience stores by the end of 2024 as it targets high footfall areas in its expansion plans. The newest format, Screwfix City, will carry a range of more than 3,000 essential products via click-and-collect, with a further 31,000 available online for next-day collection. The new concept builds on initial tests of the retailer’s ultra-compact stores, and it is targeting up to 100 branches over the next few years. Currently, there are six Screwfix City stores across London, including Islington, Camden, and Dulwich, and it is also looking to expand the concept to cities outside of the capital.

Mintel comment:

“Screwfix continues to invest in accessibility and convenience as it rolls out its newest format, Screwfix City. The retailer is committed to making DIY projects accessible to shoppers, especially those residing in cities, by offering its own rapid delivery service, Screwfix Sprint, as well as launching on Deliveroo in November 2023. Screwfix City will support last-mile fulfilment methods like Screwfix Sprint, alongside click-and-collect services. Last-mile fulfilment continues to grow in importance for DIY shoppers, particularly city dwellers, as 31% express interest in a rapid home delivery service (see: DIY Retailing -UK, 2024 Report). More consumers are shopping for their DIY needs online, as those with busier schedules are more likely to shop online, a sentiment resonating with 57% of city dwellers (see: State of Retail: Online Retailing - UK, 2024 Report).

A key strategy for DIY retailers like Screwfix is to offer multi-channel options for both in-store and online shopping. Convenience is a significant influence on consumers' decisions about where to shop, and Screwfix’s investment in smaller format stores like Screwfix City can further support consumers taking on DIY projects, allowing them to visit in-store or schedule a collection/delivery.”
