In Frankfurt, Amazon is launching a pilot project to trial a tram service to deliver packages to the city centre. The pilot project will use a freight tram that takes over a large part of the transport route in the city centre. The remaining sections from the distribution centre to the final stop are handled by an electric transporter, and the last mile delivery is carried out by a cargo bike. Amazon packages can be delivered quickly, emission-free, and in a more environmentally friendly way in heavy traffic.

The pilot is being conducted as part of the "LastMileTramRheinMain V" research project of the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences, in collaboration with the Frankfurt am Main Transport Company. From the Amazon distribution centre in Raunheim, the packages are transported by electric transporter to the “Stadion” tram terminus. The freight tram will then take the packages to the “Zoo” stop and to the “Gutleut” depot. Amazon employees will then deliver the packages to customers via cargo bike.
