Italian online supermarket Everli is rolling out its offer in nine French cities, starting in Bordeaux, Nice and Toulouse later this month followed by Nantes, Montpellier and Lille in mid-October and Rennes, Grenoble and Strasbourg in November. The move follows a successful pilot test in Lyon earlier this year.
Founded in 2014 in Verona, Italy, Everli achieved €110 million in business volumes in 2020. The brand is already established in Italy, Poland and the Czech Republic.

Mintel comment:

“In online grocery, one of the fastest growing retailing sectors, fast delivery is proving increasingly popular and Italian delivery company Everli’s recent expansion in France is further evidence of that. Consumer research for our report, Online Grocery Retailing Europe – 2021 found that 34% of online grocery shoppers in France had groceries delivered by courier in 2020. Overall, demand for ultra-express delivery options has grown during the pandemic in the country, as also evidenced by the success of retailer partnerships with businesses such as Deliveroo and Ubereats. Other players are emerging to cater to this demand. Cajoo is a new French startup that launched in Paris in February 2021, offering grocery deliveries within 15 minutes. Cajoo expanded to Lille in April, and several new competitors from abroad have opened, including Everli from Italy, Dija from the UK, Gorillas from Germany, and PicNic from the Netherlands.

As mentioned in the Mintel Trend FSTR HYPR, time-pressed consumers are in a constant race for faster, easier and more efficient ways to procure products. Speed and instant gratification are now becoming key differentiators in home delivery services, especially during the pandemic and the accelerated shift to buying online. As explored in Mintel Trend Straight to You, consumers are increasingly demanding greater control over the specific timings or geographical location of their deliveries or collections and options are multiplying. They are expecting products and services to be brought directly to them, wherever they are. From a financial perspective, grocery retailers establishing partnerships with third party delivery providers, such as Everli, reduces the levels of investment required as well as the level of risk, because the third party is the one responsible for arranging the logistics of delivery to the customer. It also maximises flexibility, particularly during times of exceptional demand, such as were experienced during 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak. The other aspect of such partnerships is that they tend to focus on distress purchases, items that people have run out of and therefore they are happy to pay a premium to receive the same day or even within the hour or 30 minutes which has a positive impact on profits."
