Wearing face masks will become mandatory in England from 24 July. People who do not follow the new rules could be fined up to £100. England now joins Scotland and other European countries such as Germany, Italy and Spain in introducing this measure.

The Health Secretary Matt Hanncock said that the pandemic had disproportionately affected retail workers and suggested that face coverings would increase confidence that shopping could be carried out safely.
