This has been fuelled by a number of factors such as slow economic growth, job losses, low domestic demand, difficult competitive conditions, five interest rate increases between August 2004 to July 2005, although this was halted with a 0.25% cut in interest rates in August 2005, a level which was maintained in the twelve month period to August 2006 before rates were increased once more to 4.75%.
