Many areas of live entertainment are thriving. London’s West End had a record year in 2004, while an estimated 1.7 million music gigs were held at smaller venues throughout the UK, such as pubs, restaurants, student unions and church/community halls. The impact of the Licensing Act 2003 has yet to be felt, however, with many concerned that venues will stop putting on live entertainment due to the complexity of the new application process. In contrast, the Government is confident that the new law will encourage live entertainment and has also begun to look at problems the industry is encountering with ticket touts. While the future is somewhat uncertain, demographic and social conditions continue to be favourable, with seven out of ten adults expressing an interest in attending an event over the next six months.

Mintel’s research reveals that live music to listen to is the most popular type of entertainment, visited by a third of adults over the age of 18 in the last six months.

Some 48% of UK adults agreed in 2005 that the atmosphere of a live performance cannot be beaten, while 36% find a live performance more exciting and entertaining than seeing it on TV.
