What you need to know

The hotel sector in Ireland has benefited from the improved level of overseas visitors to NI and RoI between 2014 and 2015, helping to drive up room occupancy levels for hotels – with hotels in Belfast and Dublin in particular experiencing strong levels of demand.

Moving forward, as economic conditions in both NI and RoI continue to improve, it should see further growth within the market – and likely help to drive investment in hotel infrastructure throughout Ireland.

Issues covered in this report

This report will examine the hotel sector within the Irish tourism industry. This includes hotels (all types) but excludes bed and breakfast accommodation, guesthouses, caravans, camping, rented accommodation, hostels and staying with a friend or relative.

Although the booking and use of accommodation services for business purposes are discussed, this report will focus primarily on the booking and use of accommodation services for leisure purposes.

Data in this report includes general information on the tourism industry for both NI and RoI, but its main focus is upon the hotel sector of the market.

The Market Size and Forecast section of this report considers visitor numbers to and visitor expenditure in Ireland, as well as hotel occupancy rates and expenditure levels for hotels.

While this report makes mention of business travellers where appropriate, it focuses mainly on leisure travellers and holidaymakers.

In compiling this report, Mintel has gathered data from separate NI and RoI sources (eg NISRA, CSO, NITB, Fáilte Ireland and Tourism Ireland). In some cases, therefore, it has not been possible to provide comparable data for each region.
