Providing the most comprehensive and up-to-date information and analysis of the UK Luxury Travel market, including the behaviours, preferences and habits of the consumer.
International lockdowns in March 2020 essentially shut down foreign holiday travel for the majority of the year and into 2021, with many popular travel destinations shutting their borders to tourists. The ban on most non-essential travel also saw a halt to domestic holidays, with many travellers cancelling or postponing their trips for the foreseeable future.
However, these lockdowns have also caused many luxury travellers to revaluate their relationship with travelling and change the way they define luxury holidays. 4/10 luxury travellers now associate them with feeling special, whilst 1/3 are now focused on making new memories. The underlying demand for travel is still there, and, while 2021 lockdowns will prolong the recovery of the travel market, it is said to return to pre-pandemic levels by 2024.
As lockdowns lift, this dormant demand will see a huge boost to the domestic travel market as people look for UK-based villa and cottage holidays. Uncertainties and foreign travel restrictions will mean that the market for holidays abroad will have a slower recovery but will return to full force as consumers regain confidence in travelling.

COVID-19 has changed the way travellers define a luxury holiday. Whilst comfort remains a key element, feeling special and making memories have become more essential. Destinations closer to home and villa holidays will continue to be more popular options compared to prior to the pandemic, whilst multi-centre trips hold high growth potential in the longer term.
