Iceland has announced it will be launching a plastic-free Christmas range this year. The frozen food retailer has tasked its buying team to create a range of Christmas menu options, of about 30 products, without plastic packaging. In an effort to drive forward the retail industry’s sustainability agenda Iceland will offer customers a full menu of plastic-free products which includes a range of about 30 products across starters, mains and desserts. On this, managing director Richard Walker says: “We’ve taken some big strides in the standard ranges, but for bespoke seasonal ranges it was more difficult to land. I didn’t want it to just be a few things, I wanted it to be a proper range.”

The grocer also announced it will be rolling out its plastic bag-free pilot to more branches after a successful trial in its Hackney branch in East London.

Other retailers are also making efforts to reduce plastic ahead of this years Christmas. M&S announced in August that it will join the effort against microplastics and will ban glitter from this year’s Christmas cards, wrapping paper, calendars and crackers.
