What you need to know

Consumer spending on retail gambling fell fractionally in 2017/18 as a drop in gaming machine revenue and accelerating decline in over-the-counter betting negated the lottery segment’s return to growth.

With these same trends set to continue, the retail gambling market is now facing a prolonged period of potentially major change.

The betting shops segment finds its current business model fundamentally challenged by new restrictions on gaming machine stakes and prizes. The National Lottery is betting big on a raft of new games. And the market as a whole remains under growing pressure from an online sector that continues to capture players and revenue share.

Covered in this Report

For the purposes of this Report, Mintel has defined the UK retail gambling market as being comprised of:

  • National Lottery draws, other lotteries (eg Health Lottery/People’s Postcode Lottery) and scratchcards

  • Bingo

  • Betting on sports events (eg horseracing, football etc) and non-sports events (eg politics, TV reality shows etc)

  • Casino games

  • Gaming machines.

Although the focus of the Report is on gambling in person, reference to online gambling is also made for comparison purposes. Online instant-win games are included in the scratchcard segment as it is not possible to separate retail from remote sales.
