What you need to know

Black consumers are expected to have spent $13.1 billion on alcoholic beverages in 2017. Beer and wine top Black consumers’ alcohol preferences followed by spirits, but why and what they choose to drink differs across consumer segments. Some Black consumers are entrenched in their brand and type choices, while a younger, trendier Black consumer segment is hungry for options that reflect their personality and image.

This Report analyzes Black consumers’ consumption, attitudes, and behavior toward alcoholic beverages on- and off-premise. The following categories were included in this Report:

  • Beer

  • Wine and sparkling wine

  • White spirits: vodka and gin

  • Dark spirits: whiskey/whisky, cognac, and brandy

  • Sugar-based spirits: tequila and rum

  • Ready-to-drink alcoholic beverages: wine coolers, flavored malt beverages.
