The European Retail Rankings focuses on the leading retailers in Europe and puts them in perspective of the wider market. While this is a report where the numbers are all important, we also provide some background information both by sector and by country. We provide a three-year record of the main statistics (in so far as they are available), with a summary table of the 350 leading retailers in Europe as well as where those retailers operate and what sectors they operate in.

Any store-based retailers that had to lock down necessarily saw a substantial drop in sales, with a few retail outlets suffering closures (such as Arcadia in the UK). Although falls of over 20% were common, Harrods saw the biggest decline at 51%, having not only a lockdown but a loss of tourist trade as well. While physical retailers did suffer over the pandemic, non-store retailers saw a huge boost as consumers switched to online purchasing through necessity. This report only covers Europe’s larger retailers, although many smaller online companies starting from a lower base would have reported even higher figures.
