What you need to know

This report examines consumer attitudes and behaviors toward the so-called “gig” economy, which is characterized by employment that is less permanent and on more of an ad hoc basis. Individuals may interface with the brands that comprise the gig economy as either a customer, an employee, or both, and it seems very likely that the future of labor in the US will bring with it a larger emphasis on this type of work.

Definition

For the purposes of this Report, Mintel has deemed those individuals with the following types of employment as being a part of the gig economy:

  • Freelancer

  • Permalancer (eg, long-term freelancer)

  • Rental property host (eg, Airbnb, VRBO)

  • Rideshare driver (eg, Uber, Lyft)

  • Food delivery driver (eg, Grubhub, Instacart)

  • Delivery driver (eg, Amazon Flex)

  • Service-based fulfillment (eg, TaskRabbit, Dolly)

  • Brand representative (eg, Glossier)
